The connection between soul and spirit

It is important to know that for some, even though they are saved, a struggle may still seem to be going on in their life. Satan can bring turmoil and even bondage into any Christian’s life through irrational thoughts and/or life circumstances. I will show you using the Hebrew and Greek translations how both our spirit and our soul are connected to our mind. After all, the mind is usually where the attack begins! People are made up of three parts – our spirit, our soul, and our flesh. God’s Word refers to our body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament temple had an area called the “Most Holy Place” where God’s Spirit dwelt, the same way He dwells in our spirit. John 3:6: That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of Spirit is spirit. There were two other areas of the Old Testament temple that had to be passed through first in order to get to the Most Holy Place. These areas were called the Holy Place and the Court. For temple description see I Kings Chapter 6-9; II Chronicles Chapter 3-7; Ezekiel Chapter 40-44. In the New Testament God refers to His people as His temple in I Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19, II Corinthians 6:16; and Ephesians 2:22.
As Christians, though evil spirits cannot enter our spirit (our Most Holy Place) we have at times allowed them passage to our flesh (our court) and it is affecting and even oppressing our soul (our Holy Place). It is because we – by our own will – have not stopped allowing Satan things into our mind, emotions, and flesh (our Holy Place and our Court). If we willingly continue allowing Satan’s things into our mind after we have asked Jesus into our heart there will come a time when God’s Spirit will no longer dwell in our spirit (our Most Holy Place) and we can lose our salvation. In Hebrew we find listed under ‘soul’; our ‘will’, and our ‘emotions’. The Hebrew word for ‘soul’ in the Old Testament is “nephesh, neh’-fesh; …sense… appetite… breath… desire… greedy… heart… life… lust… mind… pleasure… will”. The Greek word for ‘soul’ in the New Testament is “psuche, psoo-khay’; …breath… heart… life… mind”. The Greek terms “exactly correspond respectively” to the Hebrew. We must give God our whole temple. I Thessalonians 5:23: And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Psalm 51:6: Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. I Corinthians 6:19-20: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Satan can, and does, try to affect the mind, will, and emotions of a Christian through our soul and flesh. As Christians, we must not be deceived into thinking that because we are ‘saved’ we are spiritually above all attack or influence from evil spirits. When we receive ‘salvation’ through Jesus Christ it is just the beginning of our walk with God. Acts 2:21: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 4:12: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, wherby we must be saved. After we are ‘saved’ it does not stop there, a Christian must learn to walk the narrow way (narrow path) towards God by learning and following His Word. Matthew 7:14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. We enter the straight gate when we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, but to walk the narrow path we must learn God’s Word the Bible – and also very important we must pray so that our relationship with our Savior can begin to grow! When we receive ‘salvation’ this does not mean we automatically receive (or understand) the mind of God. After we are ‘saved’ we must continually strive to put our mind on the things of God. Reading the Bible will help us understand what God’s purpose is. We must know God’s Word in order to understand what God’s plan is for our life and to learn how to walk in that plan. Joshua 1:8: This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt have good success. Psalm 1:2: But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. We must read God’s Word daily to wash the memory of a lifetime of past sins and habits out of our mind. Ephesians 5:26: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. It is the memory of our past sins that Satan uses to entice us into repeating the same sins again. God does not remember our past sins; but Satan does, and so do we. Without reading and praying daily, it could only be a matter of time before Satan leads us away from God and His plan for our life. Deuteronomy 17:19-20: And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
Satan makes every effort, trying everything in his power, to get a Christian’s mind and understanding off God. Satan does not have more power than God, but if we do not read and pray eventually Satan will be successful with his attack against our mind. If we are having trouble understanding, or difficulty reading the Bible we should not stop trying. We must make every effort. We must pray for God to help us by asking Him to give us understanding of His Word. James 1:5: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. We should ask God to show us how to pray and stop any evil spirits that may be blocking us from reading and comprehending His Word. (Also removing spiritually unclean items from our homes will close evil doorways and will make it easier for us to concentrate on our Bible.) Though Satan does not have our spirit after we are saved or born again, he will still attack our soul by trying to get us to remember the things we did before we were saved – and our watching and participating in sinful things will encourage our remembrance and help him in his endeavor. I Peter 2:11: Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul. Satan will continually try to draw a Christian’s flesh back into sin – by tempting our mind, our will, and our emotions (our soul). If Satan is successful in his efforts, or in getting us to not read our Bible and pray, we will eventually be led into repeating our same sins. It is very important for you to understand that God will not give up on us and that his grace and mercy will help us each and every day. We are not in this alone – God through His Son Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit has and will continue to make every effort to help us in our walk. But, he will not make us stay away from Satan’s things because that is the choice we must make in our walk with God! We will either make wrong decisions, or right decisions. God is not going to force us.
Satan will continue to try and get a Christian away from the Lord until we take our last breath on this earth. The Bible says that nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39: For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Bible also says in Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave, nor forsake thee”. However, if you will notice these scriptures do not mention a person’s own will. After salvation we can make the choice to be separated from God by continually sinning against him, by our own will – which is part of our soul. Satan is the evil driving force behind our sinful decisions. This is why, as Christians, we need to commit everything in our life to God’s care, including our own will. The following scripture shows us that if we do God will keep us. Jude verse 24: Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. We must give the Lord all our love – giving Him all of our mind, our understanding, our heart, our emotions, our actions, our desires, and even our family. Mark 12:33: And to love him will all the heart and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
As Christians we may want to stop following Satan’s suggestions but do not understand why it is so hard. It is because we do not understand how Satan is still able to have so much influence on our mind even though we belong to God. The part of our mind that Satan is influencing is the part that is soul (emotion). It is the part of our mind that gives in to Satan’s irrational and repeated suggestions. Our mind is contained in both our soul and our spirit but as Christians our ‘spirit’ uses only the rational part of our mind, which makes up our rational being. The soul can operate in both rational or irrational (as indicated in the following Hebrew/Greek translation). When referring to our spirit the Hebrew word for ‘spirit’ in the Old Testament is “ruwach, roo’-akh; breath …life… by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being… mind”. The Greek word for ‘spirit’ in the New Testament is “pneuma, pnyoo’-mah; a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul… life… mind”. As we read in the previous paragraph the Hebrew/Greek translations also place the mind as part of the soul. Our mind (our thought life) does affect both our soul and our spirit; but it is only the irrational thoughts that can enter into our soul – they cannot enter our spirit! This is how a Christian can be emotionally oppressed; but (very important) not be possessed! When we spend our time feeding our soul with un-Godly (irrational thoughts) our soul, containing our will and all of our emotions, will be affected in a negative way. These negative things in our life become habits and eventually become a way of life for us. But, God can and will help us to overcome! God will help us to turn from these habits. He will teach us a whole new way of responding to life’s old habits and the problems that come along with these habits we have formed. If we begin feeding our mind with God’s Word (which is rational) it enters the part of our mind that is spirit, the part that makes up our rational being, and it is this part that then influences our soul and our whole being in a good way. In other words, God’s Word will bring clarity and will begin taking precedence in our life over irrationalism. Rationalism in our life will always coincide with God’s Word. If we feed our mind with God’s Word it feeds our spirit. Feeding our spirit with God’s Word is what truly leads our soul and eventually our flesh and makes us rational beings. But, feeding our mind with Satan’s things feeds our mind with irrationalism and that leads our soul and flesh to follow after our old sinful habits. It is like a tug of war and our soul (emotions) are in the middle. Our spirit (under the direction of the Holy Spirit) is trying to pull us in the right direction as the soul and flesh follow – but, when we let our flesh lead it will pull our soul in the wrong direction and Satan will use our emotions to try to drag us back into our old sinful way of life. Satan’s plan is to drag us into irrational habits and the sin that is associated with it. God’s plan is to gently and lovingly lead us in His direction and plan for our life. It is important to know that even though we are saved we still have a will – it is our choice! It is the irrationalism that we allow into our lives that affects our soul (mind, will, and emotions) and our flesh; and though it cannot enter our spirit, it can in time separate our spirit man away from God’s Spirit.
When we feed our mind with irrationalism our flesh will begin to fall into sin, eventually leading us into all un-Godliness and away from our Savior. But, if we feed our mind with God’s Word we will follow the way of righteousness – which is truly rational. Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. I Thessalonians 5:23: And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reading and following God’s Word will divide the rational from the irrational in our mind and life. (I want to note here that when I talk about rationalism I am not talking about what the world would call rationalism.) In our Christian walk we must stay on course with God and walk in His Word. It is through His Word that we will walk in our rational mind (the part of our mind that feeds our spirit). Matthew 22:37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. We must pray that our whole spirit, soul (mind, heart, will, desire) and body will always follow after the rationalism that is found only through God and His Word. God says in His Word (Hebrews 13:4) He will never leave nor forsake us; however we can be led away from Him if we do not feed our mind, soul, and spirit man with His Word and the rational truth it contains.
Satan can manipulate our will and our emotions to cause irrational thoughts to come into our mind (into the portion of our mind that is our soul); unless we cast these irrational thoughts and imaginations down through Christ Jesus (allowing Him to work through the portion of our mind that is our spirit). II Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Satan uses irrational thoughts and imaginations to try and bring bondage into our Christian walk. This bondage can affect our soul and our flesh, but cannot enter our spirit. For example, when a Christian quotes scripture they are operating in the rational portion of their mind, which is contained in their spirit. But, when they start thinking irrationally or are participating in Satan’s things (i.e. bad movies, pornography, or even yoga and/or meditation, etc.) then the irrational part of the mind (which can be contained only in their soul) will begin to direct their life, and ultimately their walk with the Lord. Participating in Satan’s things causes the emotions that make up the soul or personality of that person to be intertwined with irrational thoughts. That is why Christians can on one hand quote scripture and then all the sudden they flip and start talking as if they do not even know the Lord, giving into sin repeatedly. Or, in certain cases, will sometimes talk as if they are out of their mind. James 1:8: A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 4:7-8: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. The world would probably call double mindedness a form of bi-polar but it is really an extreme battle of the mind between rational and irrational thoughts! (And yes this can even happen to a practicing minister!)
Satan can also take double mindedness a step further and begin playing with the irrational portion of that person’s mind, which is in bondage to him due to their double mindedness, and he can cause them to begin separating that irrational portion of their mind into different personalities. In other words split personalities. This will cause their emotions (their soul and flesh) to be intertwined with the different personalities they have created in their mind.
For example:
It must be understood that personality disorders are not limited to non-Christians. Christians can, and do, have disorders of the mind – which in many cases are caused by bondage and oppression to Satan (and the battle between the rational and irrational going on in their mind and emotions). If a person who is in bondage prays and completely hands their heart, mind, and entire life over to the Lord Jesus Christ they can receive help and deliverance. I know all cases are not this deep, but deep or not God can and will help us all to overcome no matter what a person is going through! We must completely give our life into God’s hands, clean out our house, and follow His true Word – and not man’s religious traditions! There is a prayer at the end of this document that will help you to begin receiving deliverance. If you feel you cannot pray this prayer by yourself then you can find another Christian friend to pray with you. Someone who truly believes, and who believes that a Christian can emotionally be in bondage! When we pray, either by our self or with another Christian, God will heal and deliver us! He will begin the healing process, and our emotions will start to unwrap from irrationalness; and in certain cases irrationalness and split personalities. The person’s emotions (which make up their true personality or soul) will begin to be healed, and their different personalities brought together, or discarded by God. Only the irrational thoughts and false personalities will be discarded – the things that have been keeping them in bondage! In God’s time they will be healed and delivered from any false emotions or personalities that Satan may have given them. God helps us in his way and time because he wants us to understand how this has happened in our life and help us walk out of it so that we will not be afraid of it happening again. Through this healing process we can then begin operating in the rational part of our mind, the way God intended. The rational part of our mind (which is contained only in our spirit) will take precedence over our emotions and we will begin walking in our spirit man (inner man), being led by the Holy Spirit – instead of walking in our flesh and emotions (which were being led by Satan). Ephesians 3:16: That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.
Suggested prayers of deliverance:
Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and by the power of the Holy Spirit I ask that you would destroy every evil assignment against me. I command every evil spirit and every evil familiar spirit assigned by Satan to be removed from my life, and my family (all present and future members). I apply the blood and the name of Jesus Christ to my life and the lives of my family members. I ask that all evil assignments against my generation and my future generations would be cancelled from this day forward. By faith in Jesus Christ I believe you have heard and answered my prayer! Amen.
Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I take authority over every evil spirit that I have allowed into my mind or mid-brain (even from childhood) through my eyes, ears, and mouth (this includes evil spirits associated with music, T.V., videos, computers, pornography, drugs or alcohol, smoking, etc). I also ask forgiveness for every unclean word that I have spoken due to the influence of these evil spirits. I give Jesus Christ complete authority over my heart, my mind, my thoughts, and my mouth. I ask you to help me gird up the loins of my mind. I Peter 1:13: Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Please cleanse the conscious, unconscious, and subconscious areas of my mind (setting me free from all fantasy pictures, mind travel and out of body experiences, or times of blackout and trance-like states of mind). I ask you to forgive me for anything that I may have done to my family (including my grandparents, my parents, my spouse/ex-spouse, or my kids). I ask you to forgive me for anything that I have done to cause them to reject me – and I especially ask you to forgive me for anything that I have done, or said, that would cause them to reject you. I repent for not knowing or obeying your commandments, and I repent for not teaching them to my children. I give everything in my life to you Lord Jesus and I ask you to renew my mind, covering every area of my mind and soul with your precious blood. I ask you to please do the same for my children. Cleanse their mind (including their mid-brain) from all evil influence, and please forgive me for allowing my children to put unclean things in their eyes and ears. I ask you to remove all evil spirits and all evil suggestions from our minds and keep our minds and lives free from every evil device. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, my generation and every future generation of my family are forever free from every evil assignment directed towards us (due to our own disobedience, or the disobedience of our forefathers). Nehemiah 9:2: And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. I ask that you would heal me, and my family members (present and future), from any type of mental or physical illness that may have been caused by evil spirits (including spirits of fear, torment, or physical and emotional pain). I thank you Lord for hearing and answering all my prayers. In Jesus name! Amen.
I now declare before heaven that I have acknowledged and accepted Jesus Christ of Nazareth into my life as my Risen Savior. I know, Jesus, that you died for me and that God has raised you from the dead – and you are alive. Matthew 28:5-7: And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead… Because you (Jesus) have been given new life, I have been given new life. I ask you Lord Jesus to put a filter on my memories and completely cleanse every un-Godly echo from my past. Please cover my old memories and my old hurts with your precious blood. I refuse to let Satan continually echo things from my past into my mind any longer, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I completely surrender my mind to you Jesus Christ. I want to hear only the things you tell me. Create in my mind, heart, and my life new memories. Echo your thoughts and plans to me. Help me remember only what you want me to remember, and never what Satan wants. I thank you Jesus that not only have you removed the un-Godly echo’s of my past but from this day forward you will also filter anything that goes into my eyes, ears, heart, and soul. I ask you to protect my mind and allow your Holy Spirit to work in my life. I Peter 1:13: Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 26:3: Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Ephesians 4:23: And be renewed in the spirit of your mind. I am surrendering my life and my family to you from this day forward and forever more. I thank you Jesus because your Word says if I ask anything in your name you will do it. John 14:14: If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. So I ask. Amen!

Extra note:
For a person who needs inner healing there does not necessarily have to be one big trauma but it can be little things throughout life that have all piled up inside and created an issue that needs healing (even since childhood). For instance rejection from classmates or even family can cause us to withdraw inside, and this rejection creates wounds and these wounds are what Satan works through. The wounds create doorways and give him access to parts of our mind and life. But, as God heals us that access is denied! God begins closing those doors through inner-healing. When you are having feelings of oppression ask the Lord to show you when you first started feeling hurt by someone or something, usually it starts as a child. He will bring your remembrance to the beginning when you were hurt, not so that you will be hurt again but because he knows that hurt is hiding deep inside your emotions and he wants to take it out. He will help you remember things that are suppressed in your life. The Holy Spirit will remind you of things and as he does you ask him to take those things from your life, never to be hidden again, and ask him to help close those doors. It is a process and will take time. (It is not that God cannot do it all at once because he can, but it would overwhelm us emotionally.) Little by little he will bring something to your mind that you had forgotten. Perhaps something that was spoken to you that really hurt your feelings – and as he does you ask him to heal that thought and release you emotionally from the way it made you feel at the time. Ask him to start closing doors to those hurt feelings and times of disappointment. When someone hurts us as children it does more damage emotionally than we realize. As adults we may be going through our day fine and then someone will say something and it triggers a negative response from us and we do not know why we are responding that way. We are emotionally responding to something that the little child in us remembers – something similar to what was just said to us as an adult. That is when we need to stop and ask the Lord what is it that made me respond this way. Ask him to reveal to us the reason. As he does remind us of things, things that we have possibly hidden deep inside and do not remember (until he reveals it to us), then we can ask him to take that thought and to shut the door so Satan cannot use it against us. We can ask God to help us respond the way we should as adults. Ask him to heal the little child in us and how that child responded to the hurt and emotional pain. (Ask him, in certain cases, to heal the different personalities we have created in our mind as a coping mechanism or way of escape. The personalities that Satan has grasped on to and is trying to control, bringing torment and bondage into our life.) Just let God take you one step at a time. He allowed (but did not cause) those things to be buried deep in our emotions at the time because we could not deal with them then as a child, but now that we are adults and we have Jesus in our life it is safe to bring those things out and place them into the loving hands of Jesus Christ as he heals us emotionally.
We will in essence be going back and getting the little child we left behind, and God will be right there to hold our hand and walk us through it emotionally – bringing the healing we need!
